Lauren Rea: Nanaimo Bars


Nanaimo Bars

First Layer

1/2 cup butter, melted
1/4 cup brown sugar
3 Tbsp. cocoa powder
1 egg, beaten
2 cups graham cracker crumbs
1 cup flaked coconut
1/2 cup chopped walnut

Combine ingredients and pat into a 9" square ungreased pan. chill for 1/2 hour.

Second Layer

2 cups powdered sugar
1/4 cup butter, softened
1/4 cup cream of milk
2 Tbsp. custard powder

Beat all ingredients until smooth and fluffy. Spread carefully on top of first layer.

Third Layer

3 1 oz. chocolate squares
1/4 cup butter

Melt chocolate and butter together. Spread over second layer and chill. Cut in small bars and serve.
